Because the symptoms associated with sleep apnea can be easily mistaken for another condition, or, if you don\u2019t have someone telling you that you stop breathing at night or snore, you may not know you have it for years.\n\nSome of the common symptoms associated with sleep apnea include:\n<ul>\n \t<li>Loud snoring<\/li>\n \t<li>Chronic daytime fatigue<\/li>\n \t<li>Mood swings or irritability<\/li>\n \t<li>Memory loss<\/li>\n \t<li>Dry or sore throat<\/li>\n \t<li>Loss of libido<\/li>\n \t<li>Morning headaches<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>How Genetics Plays a Role in Sleep Apnea<\/h2>\nWhether you realize it or not, your genetics play a large role in your overall health. If your mom previously battled breast cancer, you are at a greater risk of developing it, too. If your dad has serious problems with his allergies, you\u2019re probably going to be grabbing for tissues and eye drops to make it through spring. The same goes for sleep apnea.\n\nAlthough there isn\u2019t a specific gene that reads \u201csleep apnea,\u201d there are characteristics that might make you more prone to the disorder, such as:\n<ul>\n \t<li><strong>Obesity<\/strong>: There is a link between obesity and sleep apnea. If your parents are overweight, you might want to talk to them about their sleeping habits and if they\u2019ve experienced problems with sleep apnea. Apnea occurs due to a blocked airway, and additional weight can cause fat to form around your neck. As it becomes thicker, the tissue surrounding your throat will block your airway. To remedy this, begin eating a well-balanced diet and start a normal exercise routine.<\/li>\n \t<li><strong>Neurological Disorders<\/strong>: If either of your parents is suffering from Alzheimer\u2019s Disease or another type of neurological disorder, you might not only also be at risk, but your chances of developing sleep apnea increase as well. Neurological disorders make it much harder for your brain to receive \u201ctriggers,\u201d which means, it will be difficult for you to wake up when you stop breathing during the night.<\/li>\n \t<li><strong>Large Adenoids and Tonsils<\/strong>: Loud snoring is an indicator your adenoids are causing you problems. Unfortunately, this can be passed on genetically. However, these and your tonsils are unnecessary parts of your oral cavity as you get older.
